FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q:  Do I need anything to get started?

A:  All you need is yourself and an open mind to learn and enjoy the benefits of Jiu-jitsu.  We do teach the art of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu with a Gi, however we do supply them at our facility.  The first class or two, a gi is not required, however you will want to purchase one so you can learn the correct grips and techniques that are applied with a gi.

Q:  What type of shape do I need to be in to get started?

A:  That's the best part!  Anyone can benefit from using Jiu-jitsu as another form of exercise.  It is an excellent way to increase your cardiovascular system, flexibility, and total body strength and endurance!  Whether you are a beginner or experienced exerciser, Jiu-jitsu will open your mind into an entirely different form of exercise!

Q: Is Jiu-jitsu safe?

A:  Yes.  Jiu-jitsu is a safe way to learn the arts, develop self defense techniques, and implement into your current exercise regimen.  Our instructors keep a close eye on all students during class to ensure the safety and learning environment is at the upmost level.  The key is to relax and learn!

Q:  What is Brazilian Jiu-jitsu?

A:  Jiu-jitsu is a martial art that derived from Judo. Primarily, the principles of Jiu-jitsu are to shorten the distance between you and your opponent and gain a dominant position on the ground to end any hostile situation.  Jiu-jitsu is known as the gentle art, meaning that your opponent should provide all of the force needed for you to counter or sweep using their weight against them without any additional force applied by yourself.

Q:  I am interested in competing in MMA and/or Jiu-jitsu tournaments.  Can I achieve this here?

A:  Yes!  It is very important to know that we are a pure Jiu-jitsu Academy.  We teach the art in and of itself.  However, several MMA competitors and submission grappling competitors do come to learn the art of Jiu-jitsu at our academy.  We are a specialty academy, meaning that our focus is on you as a Jiu-jitsu student!

Q:  Can I test for belts for Jiu-jitsu?

A:  Yes!  We are the only facility in Northern Kentucky with 2 Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belts!  This means we can test at anytime.  Each instructor will have testing available at their discretion and will inform you when you are ready to progress.  In our beginner program, we will show you the necessary techniques needed to achieve blue belt rank.
